100 Years of Bauhaus

Founded in Weimar in 1919, the state Bauhaus represented the reform of the living world through designs that answered the questions of its time. These answers disregarded the dominant teaching, theoretical, and practical conventions of the time and continue to be used in reference to art, graphic, design, architecture, and urban planning around the world.

To celebrate 100 years of Bauhaus, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is offering a »Bauhaus.Semester« starting in October 2018 in addition to a comprehensive anniversary programme in 2019 to acknowledge both the historical impact of Bauhaus and the current era of the University - in teaching, theory, and practice.

International Bauhaus Colloquium

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar invites to the XIV. Internationales Bauhaus-Kolloquium that will take place in Weimar from 10-12 April 2019.

100 years after the founding of the Bauhaus in 1919, the 14thInternational Bauhaus Colloquium will reflect on the history of the Bauhaus at its original sites in Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, as well as on its international reception and migration. In the anniversary year of the founding of the Bauhaus, the colloquium will bring together an interdisciplinary community of researchers, providing a critical look back at its beginnings and at the historical context of the year 1919. It also aims to shed light on the socio-political context of the Bauhaus in twentieth-century history and examine the establishment of “Bauhaus architecture” as a canonical style in the architectural historiography of the post-war period. Inevitably, the history of the Bauhaus reflects on some of the core questions of the design disciplines of today, so international architects, urban planners, artists, social scientists, historians, and theoreticians will confront representations and perspectives of the historical Bauhaus with the present day.

The conference is open to scholars and practitioners, students and those interested in its program. Registration and tickets will be open from February 2019. The conference languages are German and English.
