Filming of »Eine Frau am Bauhaus« series has now begun

On Friday, 7 September and Friday, 21 September, filming of a televised drama about the Bauhaus commissioned by the ZDF and ARTE broadcasters began at the Bauhaus-Universität. The series, titled »Eine Frau am Bauhaus« (»A Woman at the Bauhaus«), focuses on a young female Bauhaus student called Dörte Helm, who is played by Anna Maria Mühe. She takes the audience on a journey back to the early years of the Bauhaus. The six-part series will air on the ZDF in autumn 2019.

Anna Maria Mühe and Birgit Minichmayr are among the actors slated to star in the series. August Diehl will assume the role of the Bauhaus founder and leader, Walter Gropius.

Filming took place on 7 and 21 September 2018, mainly in the two stairwells of the Main Building as well as in the corridors on the first and second floors. Other filming locations included the »Gropius Room« and the Schlemmer staircase in the Van de Velde Building.

A total of three seasons are planned, each comprising six episodes. The first season will focus on the founding of the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919 and the early years up until 1924. In addition to the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, the first season will also be filmed at studios in Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia. The second season will be shot in Dessau and the third in Chicago.

Filming at the University has been made possible thanks to the close cooperation in recent months between the Faculty of Art and Design, Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, Presidium, Service Centre for Facility Management, Department of Finance, Registrar’s Office, Modernist Archives, and University Communications. We would like to thank all of those involved for their support.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary restriction of access to the corridors during filming.

The »Eine Frau am Bauhaus« series is a »zero one film« production co-produced by the ZDF and ARTE, Constantin Television, and NADCON Film GmbH and is funded by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung, MFG Baden-Württemberg, and the German Motion Picture Fund.

Synopsis:
New York, 1963: WALTER GROPIUS meets with the publicist BETTY FRIEDAN at his apartment. The internationally successful and famous Gropius – now 80 years old and an American citizen since 1944 – looks back on an eventful and successful life as an architect. However Friedan reproaches him for oppressing women at the Bauhaus. Gropius defends himself and begins telling her about the early years of the State Bauhaus. He tells of the great successes and innovations in art and society, and of DÖRTE HELM, a Bauhaus student with whom he was close, who defies all of the constraints and goes her own way thanks to his support. He also tells of the old, conservative town councillors, who were initially suspicious of developments at the Bauhaus and later openly opposed to them.
