»Mensch Macht Moderne« lecture and panel discussion series tackles questions of the freedom of science and art

As part of the »Mensch Macht Moderne« event series at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, on Wednesday 23 January 2019 Dr. Rainer Ambrosy, Prof. Nathalie Singer and Prof. Dr. Matthias Maier will discuss the topic of the »freedom of science and art«. The event will be held in the Oberlichtsaal in the University’s Main Building at 6 pm.

Dessau, Siegen, Berlin – the freedom of science and art is currently a matter of universal debate. This is not just a German phenomenon: whether in Hungary, Turkey or South Africa, there is much discussion of how free science and art truly are, and how free universities can and should be. And what is threatening freedom: governments, states, or new political and populist movements? What responsibility to science and art hold in current debates? How can we protect the freedom of science and art? What can and should the University do?

These questions will be tackled in a panel discussion in the »Mensch Macht Moderne« series, being held on Wednesday 23 January 2019 at 6 pm in the Oberlichtsaal in the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Main Building. The participants in the panel discussion are Dr. Rainer Ambrosy (Chancellor of the University of Duisburg-Essen and Chairman of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar University Council), Prof. Nathalie Singer (Vice-President of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Professor of Experimental Radio) and Prof. Dr. Matthias Maier (Professor of Media Management at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar). The discussion will be moderated by University President Prof. Dr. Winfried Speitkamp.

»Mensch Macht Moderne« panel discussion series
The »Mensch Macht Moderne« panel discussion series will tackle core Bauhaus issues from a modern perspective and discuss them with members of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar University Council, University lecturers, students, and representatives from the fields of politics, culture and media. The events are open to the public and anyone interested is invited to attend.

The series takes place on Wednesday evenings during the Bauhaus semester and will examine the topics of the »autonomy« and »responsibility« of people in modernism. Current developments with links to Bauhaus are brought to the fore: what are the responsibilities of people and media as regards questions of digitalisation and automation? What power does science hold in the era of modernism? How political was Bauhaus or how political does the Bauhaus Centenary need to be? In conjunction with internal and external discussion partners, it will examine and critically reflect on topics from a variety of perspectives to discuss the resulting consequences and opportunities for action, as well as how current developments can be used but also misused.
