13th FullDome Festival opens with a premiere of the immersive musical theatre performance »Cirque du Bauhaus«

The ‘Cirque du Bauhaus’ opens its doors on Wednesday 22 May 2019 at the Zeiss-Planetarium in Jena, and presents a spectacular interplay between a digital 360-degree projection, a live orchestra, drama, and performance art. This show beneath a virtual circus tent is a contribution by Weimar’s universities to the Bauhaus Centenary, updating classic Bauhaus themes with contemporary media.

Visitors to the show can expect a spectacle with appearances by entertainer Andreas Max Martin, the ten-strong »Cirque du Bauhaus« orchestra with original compositions by Prof. Acácio Peidade, various large-scale art figures, a dancer with an interactive light costume, and other surprises. The »Cirque du Bauhaus« premier is also part of the opening event for the 13th FullDome Festival at the Zeiss-Planetarium in Jena, one of the most important gatherings on the international fulldome and immersive media scene.

The idea of giving Bauhaus a circus dimension and placing it in a 360-degree setting was born during the Bauhaus.Semester in the winter semester of 2018/2019. This inter-university project headed by Prof. Dr. Tiago de Oliveira Pinto (University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, UNESCO Chair of Transcultural Music Studies), Prof. Micky Remann (Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Honorary Professor of »Immersive Media«) and lecturer Liese Endler (media artist, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar) invited student teams from both universities to tell the story of the fictitious »Cirque du Bauhaus« with visual and aural episodes.

To play out the full potential of immersive musical theatre, the barriers between real Bauhaus connections and free interpretation have deliberately been set very wide. This means that under the dome of »Cirque du Bauhaus«, virtual and real figures come together in a plot combining historical quotations, futuristic visions, dreams, nightmares, and orchestral music into a total 360-degree artwork. As this elaborate production will only be performed on two evenings (22 and 26 May 2019), we recommend buying tickets early.

The immersive musical theatre performance »Cirque du Bauhaus« was designed as a cooperation between Weimar’s two universities at the invitation of the charitable Fulldome Festival Foundation, which also organises the FullDome Festival. The project was made possible by the kind support of the Thuringian State Chancellery (100 Years of Bauhaus) and the Kulturstiftung des Freistaats Thüringen.
