Second »Schaufensters Bauhaus100« (display-window Bauhaus 100) exhibition from 4 May in Berlin

Under the title »EGO vs. ECO – eine Gegenüberstellung« (EGO vs. ECO - a comparison) the second exhibition by EIGENHEIM Weimar/Berlin will open on 4 May 2019 at 7pm as the official display-window of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the centenary year »100 Years of Bauhaus«. In its rooms in Berlin-Charlottenburg the gallery - in cooperation with Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and other institutions - presents work by students, teachers and alumni from all four faculties of the university.

»EGO vs. ECO« explores the interplay between humans and the environment: »Climate change, environmental degradation and species extinction? As an individual, I can’t change anything! This is an argument which is often put forward but needs to be reconsidered because the individual bears responsibility for global ecological and social correlations«, says Konstantin Bayer, Artistic Director of the gallery. »The question, ultimately, is in what kind of a society do we want to live?«

This is a question which already played a central role at the Bauhaus one hundred years ago. Today, in the search for an answer, however, it is not only the hardships of the post-war society and industrialisation which are in focus but increasingly the necessity of sustainability and environmental awareness. The exhibition intends to make reference to this and collates creative work by students, teachers and alumni of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar which explore the responsibility of the individual towards his environment. For EIGENHEIM Weimar/Berlin, as the display-window of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, it is a fundamental requirement to portray the variety of the teaching areas at the university and the interdisciplinary approach of the teaching.

The vocabulary of the exhibition ranges from bitter earnestness via poetic through to sarcastic: Nina Röder’s photographs depict self-portraits next to melting glaciers from her »um að hverfa – über das Verschwinden« island series which she produced last year. Professors of Biotechnology in Resources Management are presenting a cylindrical catalyst which is being used to test under which conditions most biogas can be extracted from pig manure. The »Doggyshake« video by Polly Ost (Fanny Josefine Dehnkamp) shows us, in an unsettling-whimsical way, how the current trend for self-optimisation can be achieved through healthy nutrition ad absurdum. In this way the exhibit spans from contexts which are a threat to entire human society such as global warming and groundwater pollution, through to extremely personal questions concerning an individual’s living standards in an affluent society. A supporting programme with presentations will run alongside the exhibition in the gallery’s rooms.
