The Bauhaus Colloquium is an international conference which has been taking place regularly in Weimar since 1979. The aim of this international forum is to discuss major aspects of contemporary architecture.
30 years after its foundation, the 10th International Bauhaus Colloquium will address the changing relationship between architecture and the digital image. For some time, the new reality of digital worlds has also been shaking architecture in its foundations. Steadily and increasingly, new digital imaging techniques are creating a world on their own terms. The trend runs from the dominance of signs to the dominance of images.
Digital image technologies stand for an increasing liquification of the boundaries between the digital and material world. Whereas in the 1990s it was assumed that the digital world mirrored the real world, nobody can deny today that digital imaging techniques not only interpret the world in a new way but also interfere actively with its material, spatial and thus also architectural constitution.
This year’s Bauhaus Colloquium sees itself as a forum for the long overdue interdisciplinary and critical image discourse in architecture. Thematically, it carries on the themes of the preceding Bauhaus Colloquia Techno Fiction (1996), Global Village (1999), and Medium Architecture (2003).
For four days, internationally renowned architects, architectural theorists and historians as well as media theorists, cultural scientists and philosophers will critically reflect on the nature of architecture as a cultural practice crossing the boundaries between architecture and the worlds of digital images and material objects.
In four workshops, ample space will be provided for the discussion of the following topics:
1. Image and space
2. Architecture and image production in today’s digital design processes
3. Global media – urban images
4. The moving digital images and their new spatial potentials

Thema und Ablauf:
Das Bauhaus-Kolloquium ist eine internationale Konferenz, die seit 1979 regelmäßig in Weimar stattfindet. Ziel des interdisziplinären Forums ist es, wesentliche Fragestellungen der zeitgenössischen Architektur zu diskutieren.
Das 10. Internationale Bauhaus-Kolloquium widmet sich, dreißig Jahre nach seiner Gründung, dem Wechselverhältnis von Architektur und digitalem Bild. Schon seit einiger Zeit erschüttert die neue Realität der digitalen Welten auch die Architektur. In immer stärkerem Maße bilden die digitalen Bildtechniken die Welt nach ihrem Maß. Der Trend verläuft von der Dominanz der Zeichen zur Dominanz der Bilder.
Die digitalen Bildtechnologien stehen für eine zunehmende Liquidisierung der Grenze zwischen der digitalen Bilder- und der materialen Objektwelt. Ging man in den 90er Jahren noch von der Doppelung der realen in der digitalen Welt aus, so kann heute nichts darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass die digitalen Bildverfahren die Welt nicht nur neu interpretieren, sondern aktiv in ihre materiale, räumliche und damit auch architektonische Konstitution eingreifen.
Das diesjährige Bauhaus-Kolloquium versteht sich als Forum für den längst überfälligen, interdisziplinären und kritischen Bilddiskurs in der Architektur. Thematisch führt es die vergangenen Bauhaus-Kolloquien weiter, die sich den Themen Techno-Fiction (1996), Global Village (1999) und Medium Architektur (2003) gewidmet haben.
Architekten, Architekturtheoretiker und –historiker, Bild-, Medien- und Kulturwissenschaftler sowie Philosophen werden an vier Tagen in Plenarvorträgen die Frage nach dem Grenzgang der Architektur zwischen der digitalen Bild- und der materialen Objektwelt stellen. Vier Workshops beschäftigen sich dabei umfassend mit folgenden Themen:
1. Bild und Raum
2. Architektur und die Erzeugung der Sichtbarkeit
3. Globale Medien – urbane Bilder
4. Mobilisierungsformen des Blicks
